Your periods tell a lot about your health and that is why whenever there is some issue with your menstrual cycle, it means that something is wrong with your system. So whenever you miss a period, you normally fret because while having a period is a problem, not having one is an even bigger problem. You might be wondering that why does that happen. So basically, your brain sets your menstrual cycle and so when something is wrong, it delays the period. The hypothalamus that tells the ovaries what to do, is very much sensitive to whatever happens, for instance, sleep deprivation, stress, illness, an unusual fluctuation in hormones, extreme exercise (which the brain can interpret as stress), unusually high or low temperatures or drug use. So, it’s all in the mind!

You will be surprised but your period color can also tell a lot about your health! The color of the blood varies, it can be the color of a strawberry jam, frozen blueberry or Cranberry juice. The frozen blueberry which is the first type can be seen in the heavy period where the estrogen level is high and the lining of the uterus thickens because the hormones are in excess. However, the strawberry jam color can be experienced when the estrogen levels are very low and that can result in the dryness of v*gina, low libido, hair loss, and even fatigue. Women who experience low estrogen levels experience frequent irregularities in their menstrual cycle. Lastly, the cranberry color appears when the period is normal but the woman PMS’s which is not normal since it indicates hormonal imbalance.

Women normally think that they lose buckets of blood during their period but in reality, it’s less than a cup! However, longer periods can cause a heavy flow which can lead to anemia or even fertility-threatening fibroids, growths on the uterine wall; polyps, tumors in the cervix or uterus; or endometriosis. This normally occurs after the age of 35. However, they can also experience menorrhagia when the blood loss is severe and the female is unable to carry out her daily activities. Moreover, a lighter flow can be a cause of stress, bad eating habits or hormonal imbalance or even menopause! Even those who use birth control methods can experience a lighter flow.

The frequency of your period also says a lot about your health! The normal duration is 2 to 7 days and it decreases as you grow older. If you experience a period that lasts more than 7 days then it is likely that you are experiencing an extreme weight loss, stress, or the use of certain drugs to treat conditions such as uterine cancer. Even drinking can also be a cause of this irregularity!

Bleeding after you are done with your period is also abnormal unless you are on birth control pills because it maybe a sign of cancer or precancer so it is important to get it checked. This could also be because of an infection in v*gina, hormonal imbalance or a polyp.

So, basically periods are an important issue although they are a taboo and people don’t talk about them openly but it’s important to discuss it when you are experiencing any problem with regards to your menstrual cycle! So, the next time you encounter an issue with your menstrual cycle, it is better that you visit a doctor because you never know if the issue is much serious than you think!
